As named in paragraph 6 herein, the cost of the

Breakwater complete, constructed on the line and in the

manner proposed in the Colony, is estimated at $1,540,000.

on which it has been based appear to us to be low, when

compared with the cost of such works generally, but

Mr. Boulton assures us they have been arrived at, after

considering the cost of works of a similar character car-

ried out by Chinese labour in Hong Kong, and that at

present he considers them sufficient for the proper execu

tion of the works. Under any circumstances, the cost of

the Breakwater by either mode of construction may be taken

as practically the same.

To the estimate of 1,540,000 for the Breakwater,

the cost of the additional Jetty at the Southern Entrance,

amounting to $ 123,000 must be added, thus bringing the total expenditure to g 1,663,000. In paragraph 26 we

referred to the value of the reclamation at the Northern

Entrance, being equal to its cost, which latter may be
